Getting a flat stomach – The Myths You Probably Believe

There are many myths about stomach exercises. Here are some common ones:

Get Washboard Abs Myth I – Losing Fat Just Around the Stomach

It is not possible to target reducing the fat just around a particular part of your body by training that part alone. It just doesn’t work that way.

If you would like to lose the stomach fat, the spare tire, or the love handles you will need to burn off the fat all over your body. The fat burns off relatively evenly all over. Sadly, this means that biggest problem area is probably the last part to finally get all the fat off.

You will need to practice some cardio exercises… this is probably the most important thing you can do to  lose stomach fat. Combined with eating a healthy diet, you will increase your metabolism. You will lose the fat by burning more calories than you eat.

It seems counter intuitive, but eating smaller, but more frequent meals throughout the day also increases your metabolism.

Get Washboard Abs Myth II – Work Those Ab Muscles

What is the best exercise to flatten your tummy? crunches? sit ups? These are the hard way to lose the beer belly and get that six pack. They increase muscle mass, which actually makes your stomach area bigger!

Rather than increasing muscle mass, you need to increase muscle density. The best way to do this is with isometric exercises, like the plank movement.

But don’t fall for those late night infomercials which promise that you can work your abs through short electric stimulation. They don’t work either.

Get Washboard Abs Myth III – Blast Those Abs With Tons of Crunches

Most people try to blast through hundreds of crunches quickly. But is more effective to practice slower, controlled crunches. You can do far fewer this way and it will still be much more effective.
